Challenge yourself. Test your limits. Extreme challenge activities not only shake off the debris of everyday life, but, at their best, can also push the boundaries of self-knowledge. These are for people looking for an experience that is not just memorable, challenging or unique but one that at least gets close to the 'edge'. In today's 'experience-junkie' society, with adrenalin thrills readily available in theme parks and elsewhere, these trips and adventures are becoming harder and harder to find. Many can be done as day activities, add-ons to existing holidays. There are others that are holidays in themselves—if you can call warrior training in Mongolia a 'holiday'! A number of operators offer these extreme adventures.

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, NORWAY
Plura River cave diving
The Plura River emerges from a large cave entrance about 30km to the northeast of the town of Mo i Rana, Norway. Diving at this site is a fantastic experience. The visibility is excellent and the passage is easily big enough to drive an underwater scooter along. The first flooded section of passage (called a siphon)...

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, KYRGYZSTAN
Heli-biking in the Tien Shan
Really satisfying; heli-biking involves thrilling helicopter rides high over landscapes, rarely touched by humanity, the adrenaline rush of juddering and skidding down rough terrain next to hair-raising drops and massive speed, and of course, miles and miles of awesome views to leave you breathless.

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, MEXICO
Cave of Swallows BASE Jump
The only legal restrictions in BASE jumping are those attached to jumping from other people's property. So, instead of the Building, Antenna, Span part of the acronym, try the Earth option. Sotano de las Golandrinas is an awesomely beautiful place and belongs to nobody at all.

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, MONGOLIA
Genghis Khan warrior training
When it all gets a little too much, swap your suit for a traditional Mongolian 'del' robe and become a warrior nomad. Student's at the warrior school learn the power and philosophy behind the Mongol empire through classes in the 13th century battle tactics, archery lessons, horse lassoing, wrestling and yak-cart riding...

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, SOUTH AFRICA
The longest, fastest zipline
An exhilarating experience—a gentle glide over dramatic and beautiful scenery. I normally prefer to keep my feet firmly on the ground, I don't do theme parks or the like and usually avoid anything to do with heights too but I recommend this—it was amazing—average speed 120 kmph, height 280 m, length 2 km.

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, AUSTRALIA
Cave diving under the Nullarbor Plain
90m under the sun-scorched red dust of the Nullarbor lie some of the world’s largest underground cave systems, spreading mile-after-mile of cold cavernous darkness. These caves have been formed over thousands of years, out of the limestone that lies under the plain.

ADVENTURE, KWAZULU-NATAL
Tiger sharks at Umkomaas
Tiger sharks are considered the second most dangerous shark to man and it is true that they are indiscriminate predators. But after diving with them I’m convinced that we are not on their menu! Diving with tigers is a mesmerising experience and some reach up to 5m in length.

ADVENTURE, SOUTH AFRICA
Bull sharks at Protea Banks
This beautiful rocky reef supports a healthy population of bull sharks. The sharks are more often seen in the summer months between November and March when the water temperature ranges from around 19 to 24 degrees C. They are impressive animals with a huge girth and snubbed snout.

ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, SWITZERLAND
GoldenEye: Verzasca Dam
In the opening scene of GoldenEye James Bond (Pierce Brosnan in this case) breaks into a Russian secret base within a dam. Against the immensity of the sweeping arch of the concrete dam, Bond is a tiny black figure. From his POV we see the dam and its bowl spread out what looks like hundreds of metres below.

ADVENTURE, NIAMEY
Camping with Saharan nomads
When the simple, boundless beauty of nature calls, it is difficult to imagine a better answer than to climb aboard your camel and make the ever-receding horizon your home for a week or two. The Tuareg people are directly descended from the feared Berber tribes of old, and their homes and lives have been entwined...
