Flickr becomes like Instagram with new update

Flickr becomes like Instagram with new update

NEW DELHI: Yahoo has rolled out a new update for Flickr, making its free online photo sharing service much like Facebook's Instagram. The Flickr apps for Android and iOS get a complete redesign with the update, along with filters and video support.

The updated Flickr apps get 14 filters that can be applied while taking photos as well as after capturing them. Users can also enhance photos they take using the in-app editing tools.

Flickr now allows users to shoot 30-second videos, offering users more flexibility than rival Instagram. Users can shoot 15-second videos on Instagram, while Twitter's Vine supports 6.5-second videos.

Vice president of Flickr, Bernardo Hernandez wrote in a blog post that users will be able to access metadata of photos shared on the website from the app. They will even know which camera was used to take a photo in their feed.

Search function also gets a boost with the update. Flickr will automatically identify 1,000 objects and scenes in photos, including cars, sunset, beach etc. It will also make note of the date, place and time a photo was taken in order to deliver results quickly when a user looks for it.

In the interface, users will get a scrolling feed with only one column; before this update, the app showed dual-pane view. They can also favourite and share photos, as well as comment on them, from the feed. The app also offers to automatically sync photos and videos in the smartphone, but users can opt out of this.

Flickr only accepts Yahoo IDs to log into the app, since Yahoo has stopped taking Facebook and Twitter accounts for user registration. However, photos and videos taken via this app can be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter as well as Yahoo's Tumblr.
