Chennai Super Kings have dominated this tournament since the start. Kings XI Punjab, reached the semi-finals only once in 2008 but since then, their role has been to spoil the party of the other teams. Both teams have played each other 12 times in the IPL, with CSK winning eight times, KXIP winning three matches while one match was a tie. Here are some snippets from encounters between CSK and KXIP

- Michael Hussey has just one T20 hundred to his name in 119 matches. He scored his only hundred against KXIP in the first edition of the IPL when he smashed an unbeaten 116 off 54 balls in Mohali.

- Lakshmipathy Balaji took a hat-trick and five wickets in 2008 against KXIP in Mohali. He finished up with figures of 4-0-24-5 and he snapped up Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and VRV Singh in the final over of the match. He was the first bowler to achieve this feat in the IPL.

- In 2009, in the match at Durban, CSK reached 116 and they managed to restrict KXIP to 92/8 in 20 overs. This was the lowest total which a team successfully managed to defend in the IPL.

- In 2010, the match between CSK and KXIP ended in a tie at Chepauk. This was only the second tie at that time in the IPL.

- In the same edition, in the return leg, KXIP notched up 192/3. In reply, fifties from S Badrinath and MS Dhoni helped CSK chase down the target with two balls to spare. This was the fourth-best chase in the IPL at that time.

- Suresh Raina scored his only IPL hundred in the match against KXIP in the 2013 match at Chepauk. He scored his ton off 53 balls and it included seven fours and six sixes.

- Paul Valthaty hit 19 fours in his knock of 102 against CSK in the 2011 edition. This is the most boundaries hit in an innings in the history of the IPL.

- Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay shared 139 for the opening wicket against KXIP in the 2013 IPL. This is the second best opening partnership for CSK in the IPL.

- CSK achieved a 10-wicket win against KXIP in 2013 at Mohali. This was the sixth time a team had achieved a 10-wicket win in the history of the IPL.

- KXIP batsmen have scored five centuries in the IPL, which is the joint-highest number of centuries in the IPL along with RCB. CSK batsmen have hit four centuries so far in the IPL.
