Nissan GT Academy lands in India: Racing junkies, here’s your chance to go pro

Nissan and Sony Playstation launched the first ever Indian season of GT Academy 2014 in Delhi last month and today, they are here in Mumbai from March 20 to 23, hoping to find the next winner of GT Academy 2014.

The event will be held at the R-City Mall in Ghatkopar, so if you are in Mumbai and have dreamed of making a career in motorsport, then this is your chance to prove you have the skills. After having received a very good response in Delhi (with over 1,000 entries), Nissan is hoping for an even better turnout in Mumbai, and in the other legs.

For those not too familiar with GT Academy, this is a competition started over six years ago by Nissan and Playstation in order to find good talent and offer a platform to aspiring race drivers to make it to the big leagues. ‘GT’ stands for the game, Gran Turismo, which is used as a benchmark to gauge the skills of gamers or simply good drivers. The qualification process involves competing in a time-trial run around the legendary racing circuit Silverstone in the Gran Turismo PS3 game.

Opponents compete in simulators which mimic real world driving conditions. About 14 finalists will be selected from each city in India who’ll then go on to compete at a national level, which will include driving real cars. From this, 6 winners will be chosen who will go on to compete against other national winners at Silverstone in Britain. There, drivers will be trained on Nissan GT-R’s and 370z’s. Finally, a single winner from GT Academy India will be trained alongside counterparts from other countries and will have a shot at the title.

Right now, Nissan is focusing on the live events at designated venues but  gamers will also be able to compete through online participation via the Playstation Network at a later date. Nissan is just testing the waters with GT Academy India and if proved successful, we might see thing on an even grander scale next year, with many more locations per city. For those in other locations in India, here’s the schedule for when GT Academy will be racing to your cities or nearby.

Hyderabad – April 17-20 (Inorbit Mall)
Bangalore – May 15-18 (Mantri Mall)
Chennai – June 5-8 (Express Avenue Mall)
